Dental Extraction

Tavistock Dental Extraction Services
Hearing about dental extractions is not fun, but in some cases, it is necessary. If that is the case, our team here at Tavistock Family Dentistry will first provide you with all the information you need, including why this is the best course of action.
We will always try to save a patient’s natural teeth, but tooth extraction may be necessary if this is not possible. We will first assess the situation thoroughly to determine if we can repair a broken or damaged tooth. If the damage is too severe and past the point of repair, we will discuss dental extraction.
You’ll find it comforting to know extractions are one of the most common dental procedures we perform here at our dental clinic, and while this treatment is not what most patients want to hear about, it can help eliminate pain and restore your smile. Dental extractions can eliminate bacteria and improve oral health, and a tooth will be removed entirely from its socket during this procedure.
Our dentist has years of experience, and extractions will be performed safely. Tooth extraction is a fairly standard dental procedure, and your comfort and safety will always be prioritized. Once we determine this is the best way to proceed, we will help you prepare and ensure you have all the information you need. We will answer all of your questions, address your concerns, and provide details regarding what you can expect before, during and after your procedure.
Why Are Dental Extractions Sometimes Necessary?
If decay or infection has reached deep into the tooth, extraction may be necessary, and the same is true in the event of trauma or injury. We may also recommend this procedure if there is not enough room for all teeth in your mouth or if a person’s baby teeth do not fall out in time for the permanent teeth to come in.
Some orthodontic treatments may require extraction to make room for your teeth as they shift into place.
Wisdom teeth extraction is also very common, and these teeth are the third molars located at the very back of your teeth, which are often extracted before or after they come in.
The Process
A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area around your tooth on the day of the procedure. If you require a more complicated extraction, intravenous anesthesia (IV) may be administered, which can range from conscious sedation to general anesthesia, which will put you to sleep. In these situations, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure, and they should also stay with you until the effects wear off.
We will eliminate your fears by helping you prepare and discussing what to expect. Tooth extraction can eliminate infection and help with oral health; in some cases, extraction is the only option. If you are in the advanced stages of periodontal disease or severe decay or are suffering from an unsalvageable tooth, removing your tooth may be the best option for your oral health.
